Follicular Dilemma
|
I have fine/thin hair and not a lot of it. I've kept it short for a long time, which seems to give teh illusion of more body, but now I'm growing it out (bangs & all). The process was okay during the summer but now that winter is here I'm getting irritated. I'm having the same problem I used have when I had longer hair in the winter -- my hair gets limp and static-y. I don't like it when it does that stupid fly-away thing and I really don't like it when it sticks to my face.
Does anyone have any suggestions for products or home remedies to alleviate hair static?
Last winter I tried Pantene's Winter Rescue shampoo because a friend said it worked wonders for her ... unfortunately, it did nothing for me. If anything, it made my hair feel/look limp & greasy but didn't solve my static problem. I think it's because she's got thick hair and a lot of it. Any time she recommends a shampoo, it doesn't have the same effect on me so I can't look to her for help anymore.
I can't really use a lot of the conditioners out there because most of them are too heavy & weigh my hair down which makes it look even limper. I've tried lightly running my hands over my hair after using hand lotion and that works, but only for about an hour. I can't keep re-applying or the next morning I feel icky/itchy, like I have to wash it all out of my hair. I try not to wash my hair every day (during the summer I got away with washing it every 2nd or 3rd day).
My sister suggested spraying Static Guard on my brush but I don't know about using something like that. I don't use any product on my hair except maybe a spritz of hair spray at the front to set it during this growth process and only if I'm going somewhere fancy. Plus, I don't use a brush on my hair (I use a pick) because I tend to lose too much due to breakage. My hair is far more delicate than it should be!
Huh. Considering all the issues I have in winter, maybe I should just look at moving to someplace that doesn't have a winter!Labels: Fashion, Me, Product Review, Seasonal, Shopping |

Sometimes (okay, a LOT) I am referred to as a "crazy cat lady". I'm sure those of you who know me are aware that this moniker does not offend me in the slightest.
In fact, I'm thinking about ordering this shirt and wearing it every chance I get.Labels: Friends, Kitties, Me, Shopping |

Every winter, my lips get chapped and I'm on the hunt for a new lip balm that will take care of them. I usually find one balm that works per season. I'm rarely able to use the same brand two winters in a row. For some reason, they just don't work as effectively for me the second time around. Last year, thanks to Bdogg, my favourite was Avon's Moisture Therapy. This year the winner is this Vanilla Lip Balm from Yves Rocher.
With winter already on it's way, my hands are also starting to dry out earlier than normal and what was my favourite hand lotion a month ago isn't doing the job I need it to now. So I started thinking.... sometimes in the summer, my feet dry out and my heels crack. Last year, I found a great product called Dr. Scholl's Foot Butter that, used in conjunction with these aloe-infused socks by Airplus, worked wonders on my poor feeties.
Soooooo, the past few nights, before bed, I've been using the Foot Butter on my hands and it's really helping. The huge plus is that, even though it's smells different, it smells just as good & yummy as my regular lotion!
One final note... now that it's already snowed this week and I consider winter "officially started", I brought out my favourite jacket from last year and I'm looking forward to it's comfy-cozy toastiness again this year.Labels: Product Review, Seasonal |

The New Cube
|
I forgot to post a picture of my new work station (the one I mentioned almost two whole months ago). Here's a picture of it on Hallowe'en. I love that it's tucked away in the corner behind that filing cabinet. It's so peaceful & private. I just have to make sure they don't forget about me when they lock up at night.

I'm still alive!

Yes, I am. I just haven't had anything of interest to blog about.
Things have been a little pokey lately. Aside from me learning how to install windows this past weekend (real windows, not the OS), I've been very tired and not in the mood talk about or bore you with the minutiae of my life. Yes, I know that's what I normally do, but I'm just not feelin' it right now so I'll bore you later when I'm feeling better.
I will, however, post an update on the Ferals soon ... but first I have to offload some pix from my cam.Labels: Animals/Wildlife, Blogging, Health, Kitties, Me |

Miss Tay
|
I mentioned a few day ago that Mum adopted a kitty. It's actually the cat my niece has been fostering for me the past three years -- the same cat we couldn't find a decent home for because a few months into her fostering we figured out that she'd been abused.
BUT! the story has a happy ending now. She is thriving at Mum's. She's obviously a one-person and no other kitties type of cat. She follows Mum everywhere and is slowly trusting her to touch/pet her in places other than just the top of her head. She's very talkative and insists on notifying Mum when she's done her bizness in the box because she wants it scooped out immediately. And she's recently begun going to bed with Mum. We think she waits until Mum falls asleep and then she moves off to her own pillow in the hall because no matter what time Mum wakes up in the middle of the night, Tay is already gone. Which is a good thing because, apparently, she's a bit of a bed hog, preferring to lay perpendicular to Mum instead of parallel.
Oh, and when she saw the dangling strap on my camera, we discovered she likes to play with string! So we got her some and had a really good time! She's quick for a 13 year old!

There's something new in my sidebar. Please check it out and let me know what you think.
(In case you're wondering, I first saw the CBox on Daisy's site and, after using it a few times, I thought I'd give it a try.) Labels: Blogging, Friends |

I was giving Sis the update on my Ferals...
|
Me: If I didn't have A-hole... errr...I mean Alphonse, I would scoop them all up and bring them home for socialization but he's just too damn mean too other kitties.
Her: Oh my god they are so sweet. But I think their little claws wouldn’t so sweet.
Me: Gettin' a little scratched up would be worth it, don't you think?
Her: Yes, but what the hell would you do with 5???!!!!
Me: Uh, DUH. I would love them.

YAY!!!
|
The vet was able to remove Scooter's mats without sedating & shaving her!!
Naturally, she wasn't too happy about the whole experience, but she was such a GOOD girl, I'm so proud of her. She just buried her head in my belly like a little suck and waited for it to be over. The vet was even able to flip her over and get the one on her chest. The only time she made a peep was as the thermometer went in (she growled a bit, can you blame her?!). Then she got her vaccination and hurried back into her crate, ready to get the hell out of there.
She's a good, healthy 11lbs and her toothies are in good shape (not too much plaque) for a 14 year old kitteh, but she's developing a cataract in her left eye. :(
My little baby girl is getting old.

Oh-oh.
|
So I figured out that my increased thirst, frequent need to pee, voracious appetite and [false] sense of well-being are all less common side effects of the meds I'm on for this dumb SuperCold.
I finish the prescription on Saturday and I hope like heck I don't crash & burn at the end of this.Labels: Health, Me |

Addendum

Further to Saturday's outing with friends, we also happened across a small cemetery.
Yes, of course, we had to stop and check it out.

The things you see when you least expect it.

Yesterday, I went to visit a friend and, after a spontaneous some lunch with a few of her in-laws at The Mandarin, we went for a drive with her husband at the wheel. It was a beautiful Fall day so he took us on some scenic roads and we stopped in this forested area to look around.

We also stopped by a farmer's field to check out some of his livestock. They didn't look too happy but I still thought they were cute.

We did some other stuff, too, but I have to say that the absolute best part of the entire day for me was doing a double-take when seeing/meeting this guy.

He was grazing in his front yard and never looked up as cars passed his property -- until we slowed down to get a look at him. Then he perked up and became very guardy, coming to the fence to eyeball us. He snorted and his breath could be seen in the cold air so he looked like a puffing dragon, and reared back on his hind legs like a horse in a wild west movie (I missed both those shots, dammit!) and when we drove up the street a bit to turn around and come back to get a better look at him, he did not seem pleased AT ALL. I think if we'd rolled into his driveway, he might have charged the fence and leapt over it!
I've never actually seen a Guard Llama before but that's exactly what I think he was! And, in a strange way, he was more intimidating than a guard dog. I'm going to call him Lou.

The Feral Family
|
Here's a picture of my ferals from Friday morning (I had to really zoom in from a distance to get this shot). I believe these are the same 5 kittens I keep seeing these past few weeks... so I think the other 3 may not have made it... but the other 3 were orange, too, so it's possible I'm not seeing the same ones all the time.
My favourite is the little girl that looks like her mom (the torbie right in the front, middle). I'm assuming the rest are all boys because they're orange.
They are all so cute and cautious... they wait in the foliage for me to finish putting out the food and then when I leave, they all come out of the woodwork. Sometimes, if I make eye contact with one of them they look startled and don't know what to do with themselves... you can tell they don't want to run away and risk missing out on the food but they don't want me looking/talking to them either. It's like they're saying "Just dish out the food and go away, lady!"

A Hallowe'en long ago but not forgotten.
|

Because I promised G I would post it. In case you can't tell, I'm the one on the far right. We all made our costumes that year and I don't sew, so most of mine was held together with glue.Labels: Fashion, Friends, Just for Fun, Me, Seasonal |
